How to win a free vacation

Each listing above links straight to the official entry page and shows the destination and prize details where the sponsor provides them. Trips range from a weekend getaway to a bucket-list international vacation, and the value is often in the thousands. New travel giveaways get added as they appear, and expired ones come off the list, so everything here is still open. One thing to check before you enter: big-ticket trip giveaways sometimes limit eligibility by age or region, so read the sponsor’s rules on the entry page.

What’s actually included, and what isn’t

A trip prize is a package the sponsor assembled, and the rules list its contents line by line. Read that list: the gap between “a trip to Hawaii” and the fine print is where unhappy winner stories start.

Normally included: round-trip flights for two from a major US airport, a set number of hotel nights, and whatever the sponsor is promoting alongside them, like event tickets or a resort credit.

Normally not: taxes on the prize, ground transfers, meals beyond a stated credit, checked bags, travel insurance, passports and visas, resort fees, and spending money. A trip billed at $10,000 can still cost you several hundred dollars before the tax bill enters the picture.

Also in the fine print: a booking window you have to travel inside, often around 12 months, with blackout dates over holidays and major events. Booking usually runs through the sponsor’s agency rather than you picking your own flights.

ARV, and why the number looks high

Every sweepstakes states an ARV, the approximate retail value. For a trip that’s the sponsor’s estimate of what the package would cost at full price on the day the rules were written.

It’s rarely what you would have paid. It tends to be built from published rack rates and unrestricted airfares rather than the deal you’d have found, and the rules almost always say the difference isn’t refundable. That number isn’t a marketing detail you can skip past, because it’s what your tax gets calculated on.

The tax bill on a trip is real

In the US a prize is taxable income whether it arrives as money or as a vacation. You owe tax on the ARV at your ordinary rate, plus whatever your state charges, and no cash comes with it. That’s the specific problem with travel prizes: a $10,000 trip can produce a tax bill in the thousands, due whether or not the trip went well.

Sponsors awarding more than the reporting threshold, $2,000 for 2026, file a 1099-MISC, so the amount gets reported regardless. Some add a cash component specifically to cover the winner’s taxes, and the rules say so when they do. Look for it.

This is why people turn down trips they’ve won. Declining is allowed, and so is checking whether the rules permit a cash alternative, though most don’t. Work out what a win would cost you before you’re holding the affidavit, and give an accountant a call on anything five-figure.

Who can enter trip giveaways

Eligibility runs tighter here, because the sponsor is handing a stranger something expensive and legally complicated. Expect a minimum age of 18, often 21 where a casino or alcohol is involved. International trips need a passport with enough validity left, and getting one in time is your problem. Some sponsors exclude particular states, and Canadian campaigns frequently exclude Quebec; the reasons are on our cash giveaway page.

Your companion counts too. They normally have to be of legal age, free on the same dates, and willing to sign the same release. A prize for two you can’t find an eligible second person for is a prize you can’t take.

If you win

Notification comes by email, usually with a deadline of a few days, and sponsors do redraw when nobody replies. Then comes paperwork: an affidavit of eligibility and a liability and publicity release, sometimes notarized, returned inside a set window. The publicity part lets the sponsor use your name to promote the giveaway, and it’s rarely negotiable.

None of that costs money. A request for a fee, a deposit or a card number to “hold” your trip is a scam, and travel prizes attract it more than any other, because a real trip involves enough booking admin for a fake fee to hide inside.

Odds, and how to play them

A well-promoted trip pulls entries from people who never enter anything else, which makes the famous travel sweepstakes some of the longest odds anywhere. Smaller travel prizes are the better bet: weekend stays, local resort packages, theme-park trips. They attract a fraction of the entries a two-week international package does, and they come with a tax bill you’d actually be willing to pay.

Enter the rest while you’re here. Travel & leisure giveaways covers the wider category, cash giveaways pay for a trip you book on your own dates, and Gleam giveaways hold most of the daily-entry campaigns on the active list.

Vacation giveaway FAQ

Are free vacation giveaways real?

Real ones exist. Travel brands, resorts, and airlines run them to get attention, and the prizes can be worth thousands. The scams to avoid are the ones that ask for a deposit, your card details, or a fee to “claim” a trip. A legitimate giveaway never does that.

What kinds of trips can I win?

It ranges widely: cruises, flights, hotel and resort stays, theme-park trips, and full vacation packages. Whatever’s live right now is in the list above.

Does it cost anything to enter?

No. Every giveaway on this page is free to enter. Winning a trip may come with taxes you’re responsible for, but entering never costs money.

How do I enter?

Pick a giveaway, click through to the official entry page, and follow the sponsor’s steps. Check the rules first: trip giveaways more often have age or location requirements than smaller prizes do.

Do I have to pay tax on a trip I win?

In the US, yes. The prize is income at its stated ARV, and nothing is withheld, so the money comes out of your own pocket. Work that number out before you accept a five-figure trip.

What does ARV mean?

Approximate retail value: the sponsor’s estimate of what the package would cost at full price. It’s usually higher than what you’d have paid, and it’s the figure your tax is based on.

Can I take cash instead of the trip?

Usually not. Most rules make the prize non-transferable with no cash alternative, though a few add an amount to help with the winner’s taxes. You can always decline a prize you don’t want.

Do I need a passport?

For any international trip, yes, usually with several months of validity left. Because sponsors set a booking window rather than issuing an open ticket, a passport you haven’t applied for yet can cost you the prize.
